A Flight of Fugues

New Esterhazy Quartet

January 17, 2015, Synod Hall , 8 PM

From its earliest origins in canon and ricercar, the fugue has challenged composers as a showcase for technical and expressive brilliance within the confines of a highly formalized structure. Fugues offer similar challenges and rewards to a working string quartet; four-part imitative writing is a natural fit for an ensemble which spends countless hours learning to speak the same musical dialect, while the distinctive sonorities of cello, viola and violin provide extraordinary textural clarity. In this 150-year fugue sampler, New Esterházy Quartet presents a tasting of the genre from novel to notorious, highlighting vintages of Purcell, Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn.
